Short answer. A clogged downspout in Dallas usually sits in the bottom elbow or in the buried line it feeds, packed with leaves, catkins and roof grit. We take the elbow apart or snake the line, flush it until water runs clear, and test it with a hose. Most single clogs are cleared in under an hour on site.
Why downspouts clog
Water leaves the gutter through a hole about the size of your fist and turns two or three corners before it reaches the ground. Each turn is an elbow, and each elbow is a place for wet leaves to stop and pack. Once a plug forms, the gutter backs up and spills over that corner.
Downspouts piped into the ground are harder. Debris that gets past the elbow can settle in a buried line, where you cannot see it. If yours keeps clogging, a guard at the outlet or a downspout screen stops most of it at the top.
Signs a downspout is blocked
- One corner overflows
Water pours over the gutter at one end while the rest drains.
- No water from the outlet
Rain is falling but nothing comes out of the bottom elbow.
- Gurgling or banging
Water backing up and sloshing inside the downspout.
- Standing water in the gutter
Water still sits in the trough a day after rain.
- Bulging or split seams
A downspout swollen or split where a plug held water and froze.
How long clearing a downspout takes
A single packed elbow is usually cleared in under an hour, including a hose test. A buried line takes longer because we have to find the clog and run a snake or jet the full length, so plan on one to two hours. If the line has collapsed, clearing it will not hold, and we will tell you that on the spot rather than charge you for a fix that fails next storm.
Packed elbows
The bottom elbow, where the downspout turns toward the yard, is the most common plug. Leaves and catkins wedge in the bend and harden into a mat. We remove the screws, pull the elbow, clear it by hand and refit it with new fasteners. If the elbow is crushed or split, we replace it.

Buried drain lines
When a downspout runs into a pipe underground, the clog may be ten or twenty feet out in the yard. We open the line at the downspout or the cleanout, run a drain snake or water jet through to the outlet, and flush until it runs clear. If the pipe has collapsed or filled with silt, we say so and quote replacing it as an underground drain.

Overflow during storms
If a downspout is clear but the corner still spills in heavy rain, it may simply be too small for the roof above it. A 2x3 downspout carries less water than a 3x4. That is a sizing problem, not a clog, and the fix is a larger or extra downspout.
Downspout screens
A screen or strainer at the gutter outlet keeps leaves out of the downspout in the first place. It needs clearing itself, but it is far easier to lift a screen from a ladder than to dig out a buried line. We fit them on corners that clog repeatedly.
How we clear a clogged downspout
You call
Day or night, a person answers and asks where the water is spilling.
Find the plug
We check the outlet, the elbows and any buried line.
Clear it
Hand clearing, a drain snake or a water jet, depending on where it sits.
Flush and test
A hose at the gutter proves water runs out the bottom.
Prevent the next one
We suggest a screen or a larger downspout if the corner keeps clogging.
Why Dallas downspouts back up in storms
Dallas rain tends to arrive all at once. DFW recorded 16.96 inches in May 2015 and 15.66 inches in October 2018, and in months like those a half-clogged downspout turns a corner of the house into a waterfall within minutes. That is why we clear the line fully and test it with a hose, rather than just pulling leaves from the top.
What affects the cost of unclogging
Most clogs are a short visit. These are what make one longer.
- 1Where the clog sits
An elbow at ground level is quick; a buried line takes longer.
- 2Height
Upper-story downspouts need more ladder setup.
- 3Number of downspouts
Clearing every downspout on the house is often worth doing in one trip.
- 4Pipe condition
Crushed elbows or collapsed lines need new parts.
- 5After-hours calls
Emergency visits outside normal hours can cost more; we tell you before we come.

Clogged downspout questions
If one corner overflows in rain while the rest of the gutter drains, or nothing comes out of the bottom, it is almost certainly clogged.
Yes. We snake or jet the buried line from the downspout or a cleanout to the outlet.
The phone is answered 24/7. If water is pouring against the house, we can talk you through a quick fix and book the soonest visit.
Usually a big tree above it or a buried line with a sag. A screen or a re-run line fixes it.
If it is clear and still overflows in heavy rain, it is too small. A 3x4 downspout carries more than a 2x3.
We can. Many clogs start with a full gutter, so cleaning both in one visit makes sense.
